button only a day away!

We’re excited to have Sarah of Parisi Images back for another guest post here at Paperie! This time she’s sharing her in-home gallery space with our readers.

And make sure you read ’til the end because we have new birthday party info!

Parisi Images logo

The actual space is a small (barely over 100 square feet) four-season porch attached to the back of the house. It offers just enough room to do what I love—invite a bride a groom over to share in some wine or coffee and spend the evening sharing our stories. If you meet with me, you’ll soon learn that the reason I photograph weddings is because I love stories…and I want you to see and to know that your story is beautiful, just the way it is. The design of the space is driven by the the idea of generous hospitality—the table—an old farmstand table painted white—holds center stage. Just like so many kitchen tables, it’s at the table where we get to know one another, where the sharing, the giving, the receiving all take place when you come for a visit.

For other photographers out there interested in what went into creating this space, you shouldn’t be surprised to learn that it all stems directly from my brand and packaging materials. One way to know if your branding is working for you is to see how well it translates into a variety of uses, purposes and spaces.

I initially planned to create a “living room” scene with a sofa and large-screen display. After a great deal of trial-and-error, I came to realize the space was just too small to provide ample room for a couch.

“Plan B” evolved into pairing down the furniture to absolute essentials—a table and seating. Using a bench on one side of the table offered enough seating for clients without filling the room with excess chairs and keeps the visual appeal of the space tight and tidy.

The room divider filled with images creates a small entryway, accented by a stool showcasing the circle emblem of my logo. (I personally love this touch!) Most of all, I intentionally filled the space with gallery wraps, large prints and sample albums, giving clients the ability to really envision ways they can make use of their own images.

And we are currently running a fall special with advertising rates up to half-off (or more) — and we’d love to have YOU join us!

Paperie Boutique ad sale autumn 2011

We’d like to welcome one of our newest advertisers – Swoone!

Swoone is a specialty design boutique created to meet the specific needs of the small business photographer. We create products to help photogs reach their business goals and to bring out the most in their work. We have two primary product categories; branding and marketing packages to help photographers develop brand presence and a variety of templates to highlight their work.

One of our long-time, best-selling product lines is our Seriously Simple collection. The clean, sharp design of this line translates well into albums, proof boxes, and wall displays. With so many combinations and varieties, there are an infinite number of ways to mix and match these templates.

We are also proud of our holiday card collections. One of our newest, Adornaments, is inspired by our favorite holiday shapes. It’s perfect card template set for the coming holidays. In fact, we think these templates look so incredibly cute/awesome/fantastic, that we know they’ll be perfect for any space – from the mantle to the dining room table to the family tree, these sets are worthy of a place front and center this holiday season.

Head over to our Facebook page for a complimentary Halloween Photocard template. Get ready to Swoone!

Don’t miss this chance to connect with our readers! The Paperie new advertisers sale will be extended through the weekend until Monday!

button welcome mat(erials)

Recently on an entry by Courtney Reece Photography, we had a couple of requests to show how to put together a “client welcome kit” (and to list what typically goes in one). Although I can’t speak for everyone, as photographers and photography-genres can all vary quite a bit, I did recently take step-by-step photos of what goes in mine…

First I include a paper sample kit (featured previously on Paperie here and here). Most of my packages include announcements or holiday cards (or the ability to purchase cards as an add-on) so I like to give each client a better idea of the paper and envelope choices available from the various print labs I use. Every card a client sends has my logo and URL on the back, so they are wonderful advertising for my business, and a ‘status symbol’ of sorts that Buttons and Bows Photography was their photographer. As such, I want them to select their personal preferences for the product rather than me just choosing the paper and envelope types for them.

paper sample kit

Each paper and envelope choice is clearly labeled. I purposely use the color red in the card samples because not all card stocks start off as “pure white”. Some can have a blue cast, and others yellow. Red really highlights the differences in the final products. They can easily see how the same images change hues when printed on different papers.

paper sample kit back view

Since my clients order online, I feel the only way to guide new parents through this process is to give them something to hold and feel when picking out announcements and cards. It’s simply too much to remember from the prior in-person consultations, and easier on them also means easier for me.

paper sample kit

You can purchase my paper sample kit template at my site “Fit to Print“.

Next I include a “wall design” mini-booklet. You can see this featured previously on Flickr here.

wall gallery kit

I designed my wall gallery booklet with the help of a Pinkle Toes 4 Photographers template. If you are not a member of PT4P, other options are:

1. Photographer’s Wall Display Guide (featured on Paperie)
2. Gradybug Designs (set 1, set 2)
3. Design Aglow (Portraits I, Portraits II, Canvases)
4. Melissa Davis Designs (Wall Display)
5. The Savvy Photographer (Savvy Size Guide)
6. Simply Walls
7. Jamie Schultz Designs (Ordering – Wall Display Brochure)
8. Kori and Kate (Portrait Wall Displays)
9. Pink Ink Studios (Order Form with Wall Displays)

The pages of my mini-booklet are 4×5 photo prints that I adhere back-to-back with Tombow MONO Permanent Adhesive. The final page is a press-printed card and includes a ruled-lined page for client note-taking. I hole punch the top left corner of each page, place them together on a binder ring, and hot-glue my trademark button & bow on the ring-top. The completed booklets are placed inside envelopes from Paper Source.

welcome kit

I also tuck in my 2010 Client Information Kit. You can see the 2009 version here on Flickr. (And you can purchase the 2007-2008 “wide-format 5×7” version here on “Fit to Print”.)

The 2010 accordion-version includes a pocket with business cards, cards for my referral program, and any promotional items. Each panel of the accordion provides information and tips for the various types of sessions included in client packages, and also explains my shooting style and business philosophy. The kit also has a section that gives each client their username and password for their personal Buttons and Bows Photography website.

I print these accordion cards at Miller’s. The outer envelope is from Paper Source, and the card pocket envelope is from Action Envelope.

welcome packet

At the end, everything is gathered into a 2-pocket folder by Envelopper Inc. (You can see an older photo of this posted to Flickr here.) In the left-side slit, I include a self-addressed, stamped #10 business envelope (printed at Vistaprint). In the right-side slits, I include “appointment reminder” business cards with the dates of their scheduled sessions. The left pocket includes everything that needs to be returned to me (and this is noted in a sticker placed on the pocket) — this includes all contracts and adult / minor model releases. The right pocket includes their copy of the contract (to keep), relevant session information ‘tip sheets’, and four envelopes (paper sample kit, wall gallery booklet, information kit, and a handwritten thank you card for booking with me). Envelopes are sealed with my cute little Moo stickers – new Moo.com customers can get 10% off their orders through 9/30 with the code W9K55V.

welcome packet

I add my signature button & bow to the outside of the folder, and then place these inside of an outer presentation envelope from Paper Source, ready to mail. My clients love having everything organized in one folder for quick access and reference. I shoot primarily maternity and newborn sessions, so life is chaotic enough preparing for a new arrival. I don’t want to add to the clutter and confusion if at all possible.

Other photographers have featured their welcome packets here on Paperie in the past. Make sure to look through the archives for ideas and inspiration! A few of note are:

1. Julie Rollins Photography
2. Carrie Small Photography (and a follow-up post)
3. Heather Garland Photography
4. Denton Boudoir Photography
5. Stylized Portraiture
6. France Photography
7. Gail Werner Photography
8. The Captured Life Photography

You can find more vendors I use and recommend here. So what are you waiting for? Get started on yours! (And then send us the photos and share with the class!)

Photographers Wall Display Guide

And don’t forget that we’re currently doing a giveaway with the Photographer’s Wall Display Guide. Contest ends Friday night, so hurry up and enter to win!

tag you're it:

button on display

The Photographer’s Wall Display Templates were created by photographer Ariana Falerni also known as mommy / photography blogger “becoming-mom“. Ariana brings us today’s guest post.

The Photographer’s Wall Display Guide is a Photoshop template system that uses clipping masks and images of real room interiors to help you create amazing examples of wall displays for your clients:

Photographers Wall Display Guide

Photographers Wall Display Guide

Photographers Wall Display Guide

I was inspired to create this guide when my friend Sara commissioned me to take images of her daughter for her retail store. She wanted to order several images for the store walls, but had no idea how many or what size so she asked me for help.

And you know what? I had no idea either until I sat down and cropped and arranged the photos and saw with my own eyes exactly what photos worked together in what grouping and at what size. Which got me to thinking…

If WE as photographer’s don’t know without seeing it, how can we possibly expect our clients to have the imagination to see the possibilities on THIER walls?

How can they know unless we SHOW them that an 8×10 over their fireplace mantle will be practically invisible:

Photographers Wall Display Guide

But a 30×40 will look this fabulous?:

Photographers Wall Display Guide

Or that this three piece grouping would look amazing over their couch?

Photographers Wall Display Guide

Or in their hallway?

Photographers Wall Display Guide

There are several other wall display guides on the market, but there are none (that I know of) that use real room interiors.

There are some guides that are incredibly pricey and others are just flattened jpgs so don’t offer the ease of use of these templates which use clipping masks to make placing and resizing your images a snap. And, even better I’ve made these incredibly affordable!

There are so many possible uses for these templates, here are just a few:

• Create a visually stunning framed or canvas grouping to add to the end of your client galleries to encourage large size print sales
• Create a page on your website about canvas displays using your own images as an example for your clients
• Create a page on your website or blog showing the difference in impact between an 8×10 and a 30×40 in a REAL ROOM!
• Use to prepare for or during in person client ordering sessions to nail down the perfect scale and arrangement of an image grouping or even a single image
• Show the difference in terms of ratio and cropping that an 8×10 vs an 11×14 has on the same image.

Read about more of the product features or watch a behind the scenes tour of the templates here!

If you don’t know how to use clipping masks, don’t worry because I have created a video tutorial to explain it all.

I have priced these at $50 each for the couch, the chair or the fireplace template, but for a limited time am offering an introductory price of $40 each or $85 for all three.

Even better, I’m giving one away right here! But if you just need to have these RIGHT NOW, I’m also creating an additional 25% discount for Paperie Boutique readers that ends at midnight EDT on Saturday, July 24th! Use the code “paper” (without the quotation marks) at checkout.

To enter for the free giveaway, you can do one (or all) of these three things:

1. “Like” the Photographer’s Wall Display Guides “Facebook fan page

2. “Like” Ariana Falerni Photography’s “Facebook fan page

3. Follow becoming-mom on Twitter

Then come back and comment here that you’ve done so – each entry requires its own separate comment.

Comment(s) must be posted here by 11:59 p.m. EDT on Friday, July 23rd. You can enter up to three times total. Post what you have “liked” or “followed” in separate comments to have multiple chances to win!

Comments on this entry will be numbered in order of posting. The winning number will be chosen by Random.org, and the winner will be contacted within 24 hours of contest’s end to claim their prize. Good luck!

UPDATE: The winner has now been announced in the comments – congrats to her, thanks to everyone who entered, and huge thanks to the Photographer’s Wall Display Guide!

Huge thanks to Ariana and Photographer’s Wall Display Guide for this giveaway!
